POT BELLY IS NOT A SIGN OF AFFLUENCE!

 Obesity

Pot belly is a term commonly used to refer to abdominal or central obesity, a condition in which there is an outward protrusion of the belly; or an increased diameter of the lower abdomen, resulting from excessive accumulation of fat in the mid-section and a ballooning out of the intestines.

It is a health hazard that is viewed in our environment as evidence of arrival of wealth or good living.
Obesity, as a broad term, refers to a Body Mass Index above 30 and is fast becoming an epidemic in the modern world. It is one of the leading direct and indirect causes of ill health and death among the general population all over the world.

A pot belly results from continuous deposit and accumulation of fat tissue in the inner organs and the intestines, to such a degree as to have negative impact on the general health of the individual concerned.
Often, a build-up of toxic fecal matter in the colon over time also contributes to ever-widening abdominal girth, which is labelled ‘pot belly.’ The Austrian scientist and holistic physician, Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, describes the resulting abnormal posture of such individual as “the big bass drum player” posture.
It is worthy of note that abdominal obesity is not necessarily peculiar to overweight or obese individuals, as people with apparent normal weight may have unhealthy abdominal girth/ waistline and would therefore be regarded as having a pot belly.

It is equally worthy of note that abdominal fat in obesity is far more dangerous to general health than fat found under the skin and fat found in skeletal muscles.

Health hazards of pot belly
Abdominal obesity has been linked to several health conditions, including hypertension, Metabolic Syndrome X (Reaven’s disease), Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, erectile dysfunction, certain cancers, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Generally, the causes of obesity also factor in as causes of pot belly/abdominal obesity, and they include:
Diet: The way most people eat is at odds with the needs of the body. Obesity often results from net energy imbalance, in which the individual eats and stores more fat than s/he expends in energy on normal daily activities. Improper dietary habit as regards regimen (time of day when meals are ingested), content (quality of ingested food) and technique (poor chewing habits, especially the so called ‘swallow’) result in fermentation and decay of undigested food, steady deposit of abdominal fat and slackening of the intestines which, over time, results in a pot belly.

Genetic predisposition: Some individuals are said to be deficient in leptin – a hormone produced by fat cells which tells a person when he or she is full and should top eating. When you are deficient in leptin, you are more likely to overeat and become obese.

Cushing’s syndrome: This is a hormonal disorder caused by high levels of cortisol, with symptoms such as upper body obesity, rounded face, increased fat around the neck, thinning arms and legs, fatigue, weakness, high blood pressure, and mood disorders.

Medications: Steroids, such as dexamethasone.
Chronic constipation/irregular bowel movement: This leads to build-up of toxic fecal matter in the colon, the decomposition of which leads to release of such toxins as putrescine, neurine and cadaverine. These are re-absorbed into the blood stream in a process referred to as intestinal auto-intoxification in Mayr medicine.

Detoxification helps
Detoxification is the physiologic or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body of a living organism. In humans, detoxification is chiefly carried out by the liver and to a lesser degree, the skin, kidneys and lungs. However, in people with abdominal obesity, the liver is often overworked and over-loaded, hence the need for detoxification.

Such individuals usually require an overhauling of their dietary habit, thorough cleansing of the intestines using medical solutions and herbal teas, the colon through colon hydrotherapy and irrigation; as well as toning up of the inevitably slack guts which put pressure on the pelvic organs and the spine, using the technique of Mayr abdominal therapy. These can be achieved via supervised detoxification.

Detoxification also rids the intestines of parasites and worms which contribute to ill health and death. Combined with relaxation and regimented physical exercise, detoxification helps to:
Lose excess weight/fat. The individual undergoing detoxification soon observes a steady weight loss, which is most noticeable around the mid-section. This is because fat in the internal organs is more metabolically active and gets broken down faster than fat in the tissues.
Instill a healthy eating habit which arms the individual with lifelong knowledge of correct diet, proper chewing techniques and regular exercise/relaxation methods.

Greatly reduce a person’s risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, infertility and other conditions that have been linked with pot belly.

Improve physical appearance and skin tone. A person’s physical appearance is often a good indicator of their state of health. Detoxification helps improve skin tone and generally beautify physical appearance.
Engender personal confidence, inner peace and feeling of well-being. It is recommended that people should annually rid the body of toxins in a health therapy protocol.

What is Measles?

Measles and its remedy

Measles and its remedy

What is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease and is sometimes also referred to as Rubeola. Symptoms and signs of measles include a hacking cough, fever, watery eyes and runny nose, as well as a rash. A characteristic feature of measles is the development of Koplik’s spots – small red spots with blue-white centers that appear inside the mouth. Sensitivity to bright lights is another common feature in children who have measles.

Measles is best known for the full-body rash it causes. This rash usually has a reddish-brown blotchy appearance and initially surfaces on the face, around the ears, and on the neck. Within three days, it then spreads to the rest of the face, neck, body and then on to the feet. The rash lasts for about a week.

Diagnosing Measles

The diagnosis of measles is based on the physical symptoms presented, especially the characteristic rash. In some cases, measles may lead to other health complications such as croup, bronchitis, pneumonia, pink eye, myocarditis, and encephalitis. Secondary ear and bacterial infections may also occur.

The measles vaccine, together with the mumps and rubella (German measles) vaccines (MMR), should be administered to prevent and protect against the disease. A booster dose is generally administered around the age of 4 or 5 years old.

Infants who have not been immunized may receive the measles vaccine within 72 hours of exposure to the virus. However, there has been controversy surrounding the MMR immunization— it has been linked to autism– most likely related to the inactive ingredients originally found in the vaccine.
What Causes Measles?

It is a very common but dangerous childhood disease caused by the paramyxo virus. Because of widespread immunization, the number of children who contract measles has declined dramatically. When cases of measles do occur, it is generally because children have not been vaccinated, their immunity has diminished since they received the vaccine, or they have weakened immune systems.

The measles virus is spread by the transfer of droplets from the nose, throat and mouth of someone who is in the early stages of the disease. The droplets are sprayed into the air during sneezing and coughing. Measles can also be transmitted through direct contact with the nasal and throat secretions of an infected person. Objects or personal items used by the infected person will also be contaminated with the measles virus.

Help for Measles

Pregnant women, infants younger than one year old, as well as those with a weakened immune system who contract the measles virus may be given a protein (antibody) injection called hyper-immune gamma globulin within 5 days of exposure to the virus to combat infection. This injection can prevent measles from developing or lessen the symptoms. Children with measles should be kept in bed at home until they recover fully.

Home treatment is usually the only treatment needed for measles. In short, you have to let the virus run its course. Measles is highly contagious, and it is crucial that the person infected be kept isolated until fully recovered. The period of isolation is normally from about four days before the rash breaks out, until four days after. Generally, children may resume their normal activities after 7 to 10 days once the rash and fever have disappeared.

Measles and its remedy

Conventional Medicines

Medications that may be taken to relieve symptoms such as a fever include acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is also important to remember that children should not be given aspirin for fear that they may develop a potentially fatal disease known as Reye’s Syndrome. Antibiotics may be prescribed by your doctor if you develop a secondary bacterial infection such as an ear infection or pneumonia.

Helpful Tips for Children with Measles

Make sure children with measles drink plenty of fluids like water, juice, tea or lemonade during this period, as children in particular become dehydrated very quickly.

Use a humidifier to relieve the symptoms of a cough and sore throat.
It is quite likely that bright lights may bother children – so dim the lights, close the curtains, and keep them as comfortable as possible.
Children should also get as much as rest as possible.
Children should not scratch the rash, however hard this may be!
Vitamin A has been linked to reducing the severity of measles – ensure your child eats plenty of food rich in Vitamin A such as fish, liver, egg yolks, dark green leafy vegetables and yellow fruits.

Sickle Cell Disease and its treatment options

Sickle Cell Disease and its treatment

sickle cell disease and its treatment

The term sickle cell disease (SCD) describes a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. People with SCD have abnormal hemoglobin, called hemoglobin S or sickle hemoglobin, in their red blood cells.

Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.

“Inherited” means that the disease is passed by genes from parents to their children. SCD is not contagious. A person cannot catch it, like a cold or infection, from someone else.

People who have SCD inherit two abnormal hemoglobin genes, one from each parent. In all forms of SCD, at least one of the two abnormal genes causes a person’s body to make hemoglobin S. When a person has two hemoglobin S genes, Hemoglobin SS, the disease is called sickle cell anemia. This is the most common and often most severe kind of SCD.

Hemoglobin SC disease and hemoglobin Sβ thalassemia (thal-uh-SEE-me-uh) are two other common forms of SCD.

Some Forms of Sickle Cell Disease

    Hemoglobin SS
    Hemoglobin SC
    Hemoglobin Sβ0 thalassemia
    Hemoglobin Sβ+ thalassemia
    Hemoglobin SD
    Hemoglobin SE

Overview

Cells in tissues need a steady supply of oxygen to work well. Normally, hemoglobin in red blood cells takes up oxygen in the lungs and carries it to all the tissues of the body.

Red blood cells that contain normal hemoglobin are disc shaped (like a doughnut without a hole). This shape allows the cells to be flexible so that they can move through large and small blood vessels to deliver oxygen.

Sickle hemoglobin is not like normal hemoglobin. It can form stiff rods within the red cell, changing it into a crescent, or sickle shape.

Sickle-shaped cells are not flexible and can stick to vessel walls, causing a blockage that slows or stops the flow of blood. When this happens, oxygen can’t reach nearby tissues.

The lack of tissue oxygen can cause attacks of sudden, severe pain, called pain crises. These pain attacks can occur without warning, and a person often needs to go to the hospital for effective treatment.

Most children with SCD are pain free between painful crises, but adolescents and adults may also suffer with chronic ongoing pain.

The red cell sickling and poor oxygen delivery can also cause organ damage. Over a lifetime, SCD can harm a person’s spleen, brain, eyes, lungs, liver, heart, kidneys, penis, joints, bones, or skin.

Sickle cells can’t change shape easily, so they tend to burst apart or hemolyze. Normal red blood cells live about 90 to 120 days, but sickle cells last only 10 to 20 days.

The body is always making new red blood cells to replace the old cells; however, in SCD the body may have trouble keeping up with how fast the cells are being destroyed. Because of this, the number of red blood cells is usually lower than normal. This condition, called anemia, can make a person have less energy.

Sickle Cell Disease and its treatment

Home Treatment

Home treatment for sickle cell disease includes steps to control pain and prevent complications of the disease. If you don't already have a home treatment plan, ask your doctor to help you make one. Use this plan whenever symptoms are present. Your plan may include tips for:

    Managing pain.
Home treatment for prolonged erection of the penis (priapism).
    Staying healthy.
    Coping with stress and worry.

Managing a child's special needs

You can help your child cope with special needs in school by:

Making arrangements with teachers or a tutor to help your child keep pace with classmates when illness causes absences from school.
Explaining to teachers that children with sickle cell disease may need to use the bathroom more often than other kids. They also need more water than the other students. Not drinking enough water can raise the chance of a sickle cell crisis.
Educating teachers and other school employees about the signs and symptoms of sickle cell disease that need urgent medical care. Written instructions will help school personnel know what to do and who to call in an emergency.

Children with sickle cell disease can usually exercise and play normally if they:

Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after exercise. Lack of fluids (dehydration) can cause cells to sickle.
Get regular rest breaks during vigorous exercise.
Stay warm. Exposure to cold air, wind, and water can trigger a sickle cell crisis. Dress children in warm layers of clothing for cold-weather activities. Your child should avoid swimming and playing in cold water.

Folic acid supplements are often a necessary part of the diet for people with sickle cell disease, particularly if you aren't eating enough folate-rich leafy vegetables (such as spinach).

Medications

Medicines that treat sickle cell disease include hydroxyurea and various pain medicines. Some of these medicines require a prescription. Others are available over the counter. Pain medicine may work best when combined with pain management skills, such as distraction; guided imagery; deep breathing; relaxation; and positive, encouraging self-talk.

Pain treatment for sickle cell disease pain varies depending on how bad the pain is and how long the pain lasts. Medicines that treat the pain include over-the-counter pain relievers (such as ibuprofen) and prescription opioids (such as codeine). Opiate pain medicines are used under careful medical supervision.

Surgery

Some sickle cell complications are treated with surgery. Surgery options include:

Removal of the spleen (splenectomy), to prevent the trapping of too many red blood cells in the spleen (splenic sequestration).
Removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy), to prevent problems caused by gallstones.
Draining fluid from the penis in cases of severe priapism.
Hip replacement, if the tissue in the hip breaks down and dies because it doesn't get enough blood (osteonecrosis).

Other Treatment

Blood transfusions may be used for sickle cell disease. They are the treatment of choice to prevent strokes and treat other aspects of this disease. They can reduce the risk of some complications and improve symptoms of severe anemia.

Stem cell transplants can cure sickle cell disease. But they are not common.

Herbal Medicine: There are herbal medicines which has been successful in management and cure of Sickle cell. Inbox us for details.

Natural Remedies For Sickle Cell

Get support for sickle cell anemia by focusing on your unique nutritional needs. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may help you manage this kind of chronic anemia:

What You Need To Know:

• Fight back with fish oil
Reduce the frequency of severe pain episodes by taking a daily fish oil supplement providing 33 mg of EPA and 23 mg of DHA for every 2.2 pounds of body weight

• Think zinc
Under the supervision of a doctor, take a daily supplement of 100 mg of zinc, plus 2 mg of copper, to help prevent cell damage and speed healing of leg ulcers associated with sickle cell anemia.

• Fill up on fluids
Drink plenty of water and other fluids to maintain good circulation

• Take a test
Have your blood homocysteine levels checked to find out if daily folic acid supplements of 1 to 4 mg are right for you, or to discover if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency that requires treatment

Amazing Health Benefits Of Red Banana

health benefits of red banana

You would have eaten a yellow banana, but did you ever have a red banana? If you haven’t, you may not really be aware of the incredible benefits of red banana, and how better it is than its yellow cousin! But then, don’t worry; because you have come to the right place!

This post talks about the many benefits of red banana!

Red Banana Benefits – Top 15

1. Rich Source Of Nutritive Fiber:

Red banana, also known as red dacca banana is a great source of fiber. Fiber or roughage is an indigestible carbohydrate obtained from plants. Fiber rich food is essential for regular bowel movements. People with chronic bowel issues such as constipation, indigestion or gas are recommended to have red bananas. One red banana contains 4 grams of fiber, which meets 16% of the daily prerequisite of fiber. Eating red banana can control your weight and reduce the chances of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

2. Prevent Kidney Stones:

Red bananas are rich in potassium, which is essential for regular working of the body. Potassium prevents the formation of kidney stones, heart disease and cancer. It also helps in calcium retention that improves bone health. Children and elderly people should regularly eat red bananas. This is because children need more calcium than in adults for proper development of the bones and growth. On the other hand, aged people tend to lose calcium, as they grow older. Hence, people above the fifties should eat red bananas daily.

3. Rich In Vitamin C:

Red banana is rich in Vitamin C, which is an antioxidant. Vitamin C gives protection against free radicals, thereby reducing the chances of cancer and heart attack. It also strengthens the immune system and metabolism. A single red banana contains 16% of the daily needed dose of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is highly important for the overall health and those who do not favour citrus fruits such as oranges and limes can get good amount of vitamin C from red banana.

4. Weight Reduction:

Red bananas contain fewer calories as compared to other fruits. So if you include red banana in your diet every day, you can fill up your stomach without consuming too many calories. This can be helpful to stay fresh and healthy throughout the day. A single banana contains only 90 calories, has high fiber content and is easily broken down. It does not contain any fat, so you can easily consume it even if you are overweight. The roughage present in it will not make you feel hungry and will rather make you feel satiated for long.

5. Red Bananas Improve Blood:

Red bananas are rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants, which help in improving the haemoglobin count and the quality of the blood flowing in your body. Vitamin B-6 is essential for metabolism of protein and red blood cells. It is also essential for the formation of haemoglobin. It aids in the transformation of tryptophan to serotonin. It is required to manufacture antibodies and maintain a healthy immune system. It also retains the glucose level in your blood. One red banana can meet 20% of your daily need of Vitamin B-6. Vitamin B-6 deficiency leads to anaemia. So if you are suffering from anaemia, then you should consume 2 to 3 bananas every day to improve your RBC count. This will not only boost your immunity, but will also energize you.

6. An Instant Source Of Energy:

Sportspersons consume high amount of red bananas during intervals because they need an instant boost of energy, and red bananas can give instant energy. Red bananas can convert natural sugars into instant energy. If you give red bananas to your kids daily during breakfast, they can remain energized throughout the day. Even adults who get very less time to have a rich breakfast can consume one red banana in the morning, which will prevent lethargy. Bananas are also good for the brain, and so you should definitely make it an important part of your breakfast.

7. Quit smoking With Red banana:

Red bananas are filled with Vitamin C, B-6, potassium and magnesium that are helpful to deal with the after-effects of smoking cessation. The potassium and magnesium present in red banana helps the body to recover from sudden nicotine withdrawal. It battles with the side effects caused by nicotine removal while providing you with energy and fulfilment. Smoking cessation can cause various physical as well as psychological problems in you.

In the initial few weeks, your body goes through many changes leading to stress, and sudden and strong cravings for nicotine. Under these conditions, you are not able to fulfil your desires for smoking, which leads to stress and anxiety again. You may also go through symptoms such as nausea, aggression, irritability, depression, lethargy, headaches and mood swings. This can be the most difficult phase for you as your body and brain both crave for smoking, but if you genuinely want to quit smoking, then have control over yourself and try having red banana as a substitute.

8. Eat Red banana For Curing Heartburn:

Red bananas have an antacid effect, so if you are suffering from frequent heartburns, then eating one banana daily can give you relief from heartburn. Eat it regularly for a month or so to achieve complete freedom from heartburn, and then continue it regularly so that you never have to face the problem again. Over the time, you get used to its soothing effect.

9. Cure Piles With Red Banana:

Piles are caused due to chronic constipation and irregular bowel movements. Since red bananas help in regulating bowel movements, they can cure piles. Eat one banana after lunch every day for improving digestion. Kids suffering from constipation can benefit a lot from eating red banana. Usually, health experts do not advise regular use of laxatives to cure constipation in kids. Eating red banana every day is one of the most easiest and natural ways to treat the problem. However, make sure that you make your kid eat it in the natural form and not as a banana shake.

10. Skin Benefits Of Red Banana:

Red banana has nutrients like vitamin C and B-6 that are essential for skin. These nutrients help in keeping the skin tight and elastic. The high content of antioxidants present in red banana prevents aging of the skin. These antioxidants protect the skin from oxygen free radicals that cause wrinkles. Banana has about 75 per cent water by weight. Thus, banana helps hydrate your skin and prevents it from drying and peeling off. So, if you want to look younger with a glowing skin, you must include red banana in your daily meal plan. Use it in a face pack to get better results:

    Mash one red banana.
Add one teaspoon honey and one teaspoon lemon juice.
Mix well and apply on face and neck.
Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes.
    Wash with lukewarm water.

11. Hair Benefits Of Banana:

Red Banana is rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins, which help in softening the hair, and protecting their natural elasticity. This prevents split ends and breakage. Red banana creates manageability, shine, growth and controls dandruff. Just as a red banana facial mask enhances the glow of your face immediately, the following banana hair masks will also improve your hair dramatically.

This mask gives miraculous results to hair damaged due to perm, straightening or use of dyes and other chemicals. Simple to prepare, the results are simply stunning.

Take 1 red banana and mix it with 1 tbsp olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil or almond oil.
Apply this mashed red banana and oil mixture with a hairbrush so that it is applied evenly all over the scalp.

Wash with lukewarm water after half an hour.
Make sure that the red banana is mashed properly without lumps so that the oil blends properly with the banana mash.

12. Stress Relief:

Bananas are loaded with potassium, which stabilizes the heartbeat and as well as controls the body’s water stability. During times of higher tension, the body’s potassium levels exhaust swiftly. Consuming bananas is really a healthful method to rebalance them without using medicines.

Red bananas contain three types of natural sugars-glucose, fructose and sucrose. When combined with the fiber, these three sugars instantly boost energy levels. According to research, eating two red bananas provide ample amount of energy to your body, which makes you feel positive. Secondly, the tryptophan protein present in the red banana is converted to another protein known as serotonin, which has been known to play an important role in improving mood and making you feel relaxed and happier.

13. Morning Sickness:

Eating bananas in between foods really helps to maintain blood-sugar levels and prevents early morning illness.

14. Cures Ulcers:

This is actually the only raw fruit that may be consumed without having stress in over-chronic circumstances. It may also help decrease the level of acidity, and decreases irritation as well. Bananas promote the cell growth within the inner stomach lining to generate a heavier mucous (that safeguards against acid). Furthermore, bananas consist of protease inhibitors, which help remove bacteria within the stomach that are considered the main cause of ulcers.

15. Good For Vision:

Red banana contains all the vital nutrients, including the fat-soluble vitamin A which is essential for the health of the eyes.

Are you aware of these red banana nutritional benefits? With all these benefits, red banana surely makes it to the top in the super food list! Consume red banana today for a healthier tomorrow! And if you know any other red banana health benefits, let us know. There is a comment box below!

Dance benefits

Dance has physical and mental health benefits. Dancing is good exercise and a fun way to keep fit. Ballet, belly dancing, salsa, ballroom dancing, hip-hop, square-dancing and tap dancing are different dancing styles.

Health benefits of dancing

Dancing can be a way to stay fit for people of all ages, shapes and sizes. It has a wide range of physical and mental benefits including:

Forever Young. Dancing is tremendously beneficial in keeping us young. It retards the aging process immensley. It benefits our heart, cardiovascular system and increases our lung capacity. Fact: The muscle exertion and breathing rates of dancers performing in one dance competition is equivalent to those of cyclists, swimmers and an Olympic-level 800-meter runner.

Strong Bones, Lubricated Joints. Dance aids in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis for men and women. For women during post-menopause, there can be a significant drop in estrogen levels which stops calcium from being absorbed into the bones.  Dancing can also help keep joints lubricated in order to prevent arthritis.

Calorie Blaster. Dance exercises our bodies to allow for increased circulation. It helps us burn those calories away, while improving our stamina. It is estimated that dance burns anywhere from 5 to 10 calories per minute depending on speed and intensity. For example, swing and mambo burn more calories than a slow waltz. Check out approximately how many calories you burn while dancing to your own tune:

Better Blood. New research has discovered that it is necessary to measure both good and bad cholesterol levels when determining our health. Dancing aids in lipid control, which raises our HDL (good cholesterol), and lowers our LDL (bad cholesterol). Dancing is also great for diabetics because it aids in blood sugar control.

Mental Mastery. Dance improves our memory by making us recall steps, routines and dance patterns making it a great mental exercise for our brains. The big benefit is that increasing mental exercise keeps your mind young, quick, alert and open.

It’s All About Balance. Balancing yourself in one position may be easy, but balancing in the numerous types of positions involved in dancing is much more difficult. Dancers have mastered the ability to balance themselves in a number of positions. This strengthens our stabilizer muscles, while protecting our core and keeping us less prone to injury in our daily lives. Dancing also aids in co-ordination and helps strengthen our reflexes. It is a great way to keep our Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System in tip-top shape by improving the connection of our bodies to our mind.

Pregnancy and fish: What's safe to eat?

If you're confused about whether it's safe to eat seafood during your pregnancy, you're not alone. Understand the guidelines for pregnancy and fish.
By Mayo Clinic Staff

If you're pregnant, you might feel like you need to become a nutrition expert overnight. After all, what you eat and drink — and what you avoid — influences your baby's development. Some choices are logical, such as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and eliminating alcohol from your diet. But what about seafood?

Here, Roger W. Harms, M.D., a pregnancy specialist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and medical editor of "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy," offers practical advice about pregnancy and fish.
What's the link between pregnancy and fish?

Seafood can be a great source of protein, iron and zinc — crucial nutrients for your baby's growth and development. In addition, the omega-3 fatty acids in many fish can promote your baby's brain development.

But some types of seafood — particularly large, predatory fish such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish — can contain high levels of mercury. Although the mercury in seafood isn't a concern for most adults, special precautions apply if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you regularly eat fish high in mercury, the substance can accumulate in your bloodstream over time. In turn, too much mercury in your bloodstream could damage your baby's developing brain and nervous system.
How much seafood is recommended?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say pregnant women can safely eat up to 12 ounces (340 grams) of seafood a week. Similarly, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend 8 to 12 ounces of seafood a week for pregnant women — or about two average meals.

Not all researchers agree with these limits, however, citing a study that noted no negative effects for women who ate more seafood than the FDA-approved guidelines.
What's safe to eat?

Eat a variety of seafood that's low in mercury and high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as:

    Salmon
    Anchovies
    Herring
    Sardines
    Trout
    Atlantic and Pacific mackerel

Other safe choices include shrimp, pollock and catfish. However, limit albacore tuna and tuna steak to no more than 6 ounces (170 grams) a week. Also, be aware that while canned light tuna on average appears safe, some testing has shown that mercury levels can vary from can to can.

Are there other guidelines for pregnancy and fish?

Consider these precautions:

Avoid large, predatory fish. To reduce your exposure to mercury, don't eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish.
Avoid uncooked fish and shellfish. To avoid ingesting harmful bacteria or viruses, avoid uncooked fish and shellfish, including sushi, sashimi and refrigerated uncooked seafood labeled nova style, lox, kippered, smoked or jerky.
Understand local fish advisories. If you eat fish from local waters, pay attention to local advisories. If advice isn't available, limit fish from local waters to 6 ounces (170 grams) a week and don't eat other fish that week.
Cook seafood properly. Cook fish to an internal temperature of 145 F (63 C). The fish is done when it separates into flakes and appears opaque throughout. Cook shrimp, lobster and scallops until they're milky white. Cook clams, mussels and oysters until their shells open. Discard any that don't open.

Are there other ways to get omega-3 fatty acids?

Beyond seafood, other sources of omega-3 fatty acids include:

Foods. Flaxseed — ground seeds or oil — canola oil, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts and soybeans (edamame) are all good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
Fortified foods. Yogurt, milk and eggs can be fortified with omega-3 fatty acids.
Supplements. Supplements typically contain fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids from marine plant sources. Talk to your doctor before taking any supplement.

Keep in mind, however, that researchers haven't yet determined whether omega-3 fatty acids from plant sources can promote fetal brain development. While pregnant women can get omega-3 fatty acids from many sources, most experts recommend eating seafood for this purpose.
What's the bottom line?

Though mercury can harm a developing baby's brain, eating average amounts of seafood containing low levels of mercury during pregnancy hasn't been shown to cause problems. And the omega-3 fatty acids in many types of fish — especially salmon and tuna — can promote healthy cognitive development. As long as you avoid fish known to be high in mercury or contaminated with pollutants, fish can be a regular part of your healthy-eating plan during pregnancy.

Pregnancy - pre-eclampsia

Summary

Toxemia of pregnancy, known medically as preeclampsia, has sometimes been called "first pregnancy disease." Maybe not any more. A new study suggests that later pregnancies get just as risky if a woman waits 10 years between babies.

Pre-eclampsia strikes one in 20 pregnant U.S. women. This sudden rise in blood pressure threatens both the unborn child and even the mother. In severe cases, the only cure is immediate induced delivery or C-section.
Furthermore, pre-eclampsia is a serious condition of pregnancy characterised by high blood pressure, protein in the urine and swelling of the hands, feet and face. Most women with pre-eclampsia don't have obvious symptoms, so regular antenatal check-ups are vital. The only cure is delivery of the baby

More so, pre-eclampsia is a serious disorder of pregnancy characterised by high maternal blood pressure, protein in the urine and severe fluid retention. It is the most common serious medical complication of pregnancy, affecting around five to 10 per cent of all pregnancies in Australia. One to two per cent of cases are severe enough to threaten the lives of both the mother and her unborn child.

Pre-eclampsia accounts for one in five inductions and one in six Caesarean sections. The mechanisms behind the condition are mysterious, but genetic factors and the placenta seem to play significant roles. For reasons unknown, pre-eclampsia tends to be more common in first, rather than subsequent, pregnancies. The mother’s blood pressure usually returns to normal after the baby and placenta are delivered.

Effects on the mother

Pre-eclampsia may develop at any time during the second half of pregnancy, but commonly develops during the later stages of pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia most commonly causes high blood pressure and protein in the urine. It can also have a large spectrum of effects and potentially involve most body organs. In its most severe forms, it can cause problems in the kidneys, liver, brain and blood (in particular, the coagulation system). It is difficult to predict who will be affected, but certain women appear to be more at risk than others, including:

    Women experiencing their first pregnancy
Those with pre-existing high blood pressure or some other types of vascular disease
Women with a family history of the condition
    Diabetics
    Women pregnant with multiple fetuses.

The disorder can be asymptomatic

Contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that pre-eclampsia is caused by emotional stress, working too hard or not getting sufficient bed rest. Pre-eclampsia initially has no obvious symptoms and most women with the condition feel fine. That’s why regular antenatal checks are so important. Pre-eclampsia is suspected if there is:

A sudden elevation in blood pressure (above levels at the start of pregnancy)
    Proteinuria (protein in the urine).

Serious signs

If left untreated, pre-eclampsia can lead to convulsions, kidney failure, liver failure, clotting problems or death. Some of the advanced symptoms of the disorder include:

    Dizziness
    Headache
Visual disturbances, such as flashing lights
Abdominal pain just below the ribs
    Nausea and vomiting.

Effects on the unborn baby

Around five to 10 per cent of pre-term deliveries in Australia are due to pre-eclampsia or its associated complications. In utero, the baby is sustained by a special organ of pregnancy called the placenta. This organ allows oxygen and nutrients to pass from the mother’s bloodstream to the baby, and waste products (such as carbon dioxide) to pass from the baby’s bloodstream to the mother.

In pre-eclampsia, blood flow to the placenta becomes sluggish. In severe cases, the baby can be gradually starved of oxygen and nutrients, which may affect its growth. This growth restriction threatens the life of the baby and it is then necessary to deliver the baby prematurely. Another serious complication of pre-eclampsia is abruptio placentae, which means the placenta separates from the uterine wall and the woman experiences vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain. This is a medical emergency.

Diagnosis and treatment

Some symptoms of pre-eclampsia, such as fluid retention, are also typical of normal pregnancy. This means that some women may dismiss the early warning signs. Regular antenatal checks are vital. At present, there is no way to cure pre-eclampsia. Sometimes medication is needed to control blood pressure and prevent convulsions, and the woman may benefit from resting. The only cure is to deliver the baby and the placenta.

Current research

Maternal deaths are very rare; however, pre-eclampsia and its associated complications are responsible for around 15 per cent of maternal deaths. Medical researchers are looking for ways to predict pre-eclampsia, in order to further minimise the risks for susceptible mothers and their babies. Since pre-eclampsia tends to run in families, scientists are currently looking for the specific gene(s) which predispose a person to this condition. If discovered, it is hoped there will eventually be a pre-pregnancy test for the condition.
