8 Things You Didn't Know About Your Penis






Sensitivity, pleasure, size, and other surprising facts.

1. Use It or Lose It
You need to have erections regularly to keep your penis in shape. "It has to be essentially exercised," says Tobias Kohler, MD, assistant professor of urology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

To maintain a healthy tone, the smooth muscle of the penis must be periodically enriched with oxygen by the rush of blood that engorges the penis and makes it erect, Kohler says.

If a guy is physically able to get erect, but never has erections during the day -- maybe he finds himself in very un-erotic circumstances for a long time -- he needn't worry. The brain has an automatic penis maintenance function built in.

Impulses from the brain cause erections during the dreaming phase of sleep, called the REM phase. It doesn't matter if you're having a hot sexdream or a zombie apocalypse nightmare -- your penis gets hard during that period of the sleep cycle.

But some men are physically unable to get erections, such as those who've suffered trauma to the nerves involved or who have nerve or blood vessel damage caused by diabetes.

"If they don't do anything to maintain normal erections, they will get shortening of the penis," Kohler says. Without regular erections, penile tissue can become less elastic and shrink, making the penis 1-2 centimeters shorter.

A device like a vacuum pump, which forces the penis to swell with blood, can help men with physical erection problems maintain a healthy penis, Kohler says.

2. Your Penis May Be a 'Grower' or a 'Show-er'
Among men, there is no consistent relationship between the size of the flaccid penis and its full erect length.

In one study of 80 men, researchers found that increases from flaccid to erect lengths ranged widely, from less than a quarter-inch to 3.5 inches longer.

Whatever the clinical significance of these data may be, the locker-room significance is considerable. You can't assume that a dude with a big, limp penis gets much bigger with an erection. And the guy whose penis looks tiny might get a surprisingly big erection.

An analysis of more than a thousand measurements taken by sex researcher Alfred Kinsey shows that shorter flaccid penises tend to gain about twice as much length as longer flaccid penises.

A penis that doesn't gain much length with an erection has become known as a "show-er," and a penis that gains a lot is said to be a "grower." These are not medical terms, and there aren't scientifically established thresholds for what's a show-er or a grower.

Kinsey's data suggest that most penises aren't extreme show-ers or growers. About 12% of penises gained one-third or less of their total length with an erection, and about 7% doubled in length when erect.

3. The Pleasure Zone
Many men consider the underside of the glans (head) of the penis and the underside of the shaft to be most sensitive to sexual pleasure.

Researchers asked 81 healthy men to rate the erotic sensitivity of different areas of their bodies, including not only the penis but also zones such as the scrotum, anus, nipples, and neck.

The underside of the glans and underside of the shaft had the highest sensitivity rating for a significant majority of men, followed by the upper side of the glans, left and right sides of the glans, sides of the penis, upper side of the shaft, and foreskin (for the minority of men who were uncircumcised). The study findings were reported in the British Journal of Urology International in 2009.

4. Sensitivity Declines With Age
Studies show that the penis steadily loses sensitivity as men age though it's hard to say exactly by how much. That's because different researchers have used different ways to stimulate the penis and measure sensitivity.

In general, the sensitivity of the penis is gauged by the least amount of stimulation a man is able to feel. That is called the "sensory threshold."

Despite differences between studies, the data show a clear trend when taken together. From age 25 on, sensitivity starts to decline. The sharpest decline in sensitivity is seen between age 65 and 75.

What's less clear is whether men really notice a loss of sensitivity as they age.

Kohler says that if they are aware of it, his patients seldom mention it.

"It is a super-rare complaint," he says. "On the other hand, difficulty with erections and difficulty achieving ejaculation are much more common."

5. Vibrators Work on the Penis Too
Vibrators aren't only for women. They work on the penis, too. In fact, vibration is so effective on the penis that often men with spinal cord injuries can ejaculate with the aid of a special medical vibrator. For this kind of treatment, the vibrator is usually held against the underside of the head of the penis.

"Medical-grade vibrators aren't necessarily more powerful," Kohler says. The vibrators are tuned to stimulate parts of the nervous system involved in ejaculation. "They work at frequencies or amplitudes that are more specific to the [nerve] pathways."

Most men don't need a medical vibrator to trigger an orgasm. Kohler says when patients see him about delayed ejaculation -- difficulty reaching orgasm -- he suggests they try a store-bought vibrating personal massager.

Although vibrators often help men with ejaculation problems, you don't have to have any kind of medical condition to use one. You could do it just for fun.

6. There's More to the Penis Than Meets the Eye
"Most guys would be proud to know that their penis is twice as long as they think it is," Kohler says.

That's because half the length of the penis is inside your body. Just like you don't see all of a big oak tree above ground, you don't see the root of your penis tucked up inside your pelvis and attached to your pubic bone.

As seen in an MRI picture, an erect penis is shaped like a boomerang.

7. Your Penis Is a Habitat
The skin of your penis is home to a diverse community of bacteria.

Lance Price, PhD, and Cindy Liu, PhD, researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute, in Flagstaff, Ariz., used genetic tests to identify the bacteria found on men's penises. Their study showed there were a total of 42 unique kinds of bacteria inhabiting the skin of the penis.

"We see that the human body is essentially an ecosystem," Price says.

But uncircumcised and circumcised penises don't have the same variety and abundance of bacteria, the study showed. The researchers first analyzed samples from the penises of 12 men who were planning to get circumcised. Samples were taken and analyzed again after the men were circumcised.
After circumcision, there were fewer kinds of bacteria on the men's penises. Many of the kinds of bacteria found to be less common or absent after circumcision were anaerobic -- meaning that they don't need oxygen to grow.

The inner fold of the foreskin is a mucous membrane, like the inside of a person's eyelids. Price says that certain anaerobic bacteria thrive in that environment but not on dry skin.

"I liken it to clear-cutting a forest," Price says. "You're going to get a lot more sunlight, and you're going to drastically change the environment."

The study was done in Uganda, and all of the men studied were Ugandan.

Liu says that she would expect to see some variation in the kinds of bacteria found on men in other parts of the world. "I think there is certainly variety even among the Ugandan men themselves," she says.

But the researchers are less interested in surveying the penile bacteria of the world than in understanding changes brought about by circumcision.

Their research could help explain why circumcision has been linked to a lower risk of getting HIV. One theory is the anaerobic bacteria may prompt the immune system to respond in a way that makes cells more vulnerable to HIV infection.

8. Most Men Aren't Circumcised
Worldwide, approximately 30% of males aged 15 and older are circumcised, according to a 2007 report from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS.

Rates vary greatly depending upon religion and nationality, the report states. Almost all Jewish and Muslim males in the world have circumcised penises, and together they account for almost 70% of all circumcised males globally.

Some research shows that there may be health benefits from circumcision. For instance, circumcised men may be less likely to pass sexually transmitted diseases to their female partners or to develop penile cancer.

A 2012 policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) affirms, “Evaluation of current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks and that the procedure’s benefits justify access to this procedure for families who choose it. Specific benefits identified included prevention of urinary tract infections, penile cancer, and transmission of some sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.” This statement has also been endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In recent years, several studies have shown that circumcised men are less likely to be infected with HIV. The WHO and UNAIDS now recommend male circumcision as an HIV prevention measure. "There is compelling evidence that male circumcision reduces the risk of heterosexually acquired HIV infection in men by approximately 60%," the WHO states.

Are There Natural Ways to Improve Sagging Breasts?

Saggy breasts are usually the result of aging or pregnancy. The quickest fix for this problem is to have implants or a breast lift. However, these procedures are costly, require recovery time, affect nipple sensitivity and may look unnatural. Instead you can try natural methods to firm sagging breasts, such as aerobic and chest strengthening exercises as well as a few behavior modifications.

Push-ups

Smoking is detrimental to your body in many ways and contributing to saggy breasts is one of them. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, making it more difficult for essential nutrients to reach the skin. This causes skin tissue to break down, encouraging it to sag. Smoking also inhibits lung function, which creates more labored breathing during exercise.

Discharge During Pregnancy: What's Safe, What's Not

Wondering if that unusual discharge is a natural part of pregnancy? Here’s how to tell.

Most expectant moms spring for new undies: not sexy ones, but practical “granny panties.” They not only accommodate a growing belly, but they can also be good throwaways considering all the unexpected things that are going on down below during pregnancy.

Should you be concerned about what’s coming out? “Some women have an increase in their vaginal discharge during pregnancy, and some don’t have an increase at all,” says Karen Nordahl, M.D., co- founder of Vancouver, British Columbia-based Fit to Deliver International and a Fit Pregnancy advisory board member. “A sudden increase should be investigated to make sure there is no infection.”

Here, we look at some common “leaks” for which you might need your throwaway undies or a panty liner. Find out which are merely annoying and which could signal a problem requiring medical attention.

Yeast Infection
The symptoms: Pregnant or not, you’ll experience the same signs, which can include itching, redness and soreness in the vaginal area, along with an odorless, white, cottage cheeselike discharge. Some women also have pain during intercourse and burning when they urinate.

Normal or not? Normal. because of hormonal and other changes, yeast infections are very common during pregnancy.

How to deal: Consult your doctor about prescription or over-the-counter vaginal creams or suppositories and, if deemed necessary, to rule out bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted disease (see below). Probiotics may also help.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
The symptoms: Bacterial vaginosis, an infection caused by an imbalance in the bacteria normally found in the vagina, is sometimes asymptomatic, but it can produce a fishy-smelling discharge that is most noticeable after sex. Itching and/or burning may accompany it.

Normal or not? Not. “Bacterial vaginosis starts out as a vaginal infection, but it can sometimes ascend into the uterus and cause premature rupture of the membranes and preterm birth,” says April Sarvis, M.D., an OB-GYN in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
How to deal: See your doctor right away. Prescription medications can clear up symptoms without endangering the fetus and decrease the likelihood of preterm labor.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
The symptoms: Chlamydia may produce no discharge or one that is slightly odorous. The discharge that’s sometimes a symptom of gonorrhea can be yellowish. And that caused by trichomoniasis (“trich”) can be foamy yellow-greenish and often associated with itching. These three infections can cause painful intercourse or urination.

Normal or not? Not. Having a sexually transmitted disease during pregnancy can lead to preterm labor and a uterine infection after delivery. Some organisms that cause STDs can pass through the placenta and affect the fetus; others can be transmitted to the baby during delivery.
How to deal: Get tested by your doctor. Many STDs can be safely treated with antibiotics during pregnancy.

Urine
The symptoms: Other than seeing your doctor, the best way to tell if you’re leaking urine (versus amniotic fluid; see below) is to note how often and when it occurs, says Sarvis. If you leak only occasionally, such as when you cough, sneeze or have a good belly laugh, it’s likely urine. The smell and color are helpful indicators, too.
Normal or not? Normal. Leaking urine occurs due to pressure of the growing uterus on the bladder.
How to deal: Kegel exercises—contracting and releasing the muscles around the vagina—help some women control their bladders. You also can perform “prophylactic voiding”—going to the bathroom before you have the actual sensation of needing to go. Whatever you do, don’t stop drinking lots of water in an attempt to avoid the problem.

Amniotic Fluid
The symptoms: Amniotic fluid (your “bag of waters”) should be clear, but it can also be brown, green, pink-tinged or yellow. And, unlike urine, this leakage doesn’t happen only sporadically; if your membranes are ruptured, you usually continue to leak fluid. If you’re unsure whether it’s amniotic fluid or urine, put on a pad and lie down for about 30 minutes. if you feel a small gush when you stand, it could be amniotic fluid.

Normal or not? Not. Until she goes into labor, a pregnant woman should never be leaking amniotic fluid.
How to deal: Call your doctor immediately.

Seeing Red
It’s not unusual for some pregnant women to spot after intercourse or a pelvic exam. But if it doesn’t stop shortly, have it checked out: Any bleeding during pregnancy is a red flag.

DO YOU KNOW THE HEALTH DANGERS OF ANAL SEX?

Let me be simple and straightforward, here, please: Anal sex is the insertion of an erect penis into the anus. Sex toys, the  fingers (or even entire fist or hand), and the mouth (and tongue) could also be used!

It's not just a "gay thing"; many heterosexuals (male and female, married or unmarried), and even lesbians (using sex toys and fingers) practise this form of intercourse.

People practise anal sex for various reasons: More adventurous and satisfying to some couples (cause of the tightness of the anus), to avoid pregnancy, to have sex when the lady is menstruating, to preserve virginity (by avoiding vaginal sex!), to show dominance of the penetrating male (whatever that means!), and so on.

But, medically, even though we do not out-rightly frown at it, we are very uncomfortable with the practice because of some health dangers associated with it.

#1: Anal sex could be extremely painful!

The anus, unlike the vagina, is not "elastic", lacks natural lubrication, and is full of highly-sensitive nerves. These cause a lot of pain, especially during the first few attempts. Also, important to note is that most part of the pain, however, is psychological. Liberal lubrication (with artificial sterile lubricants) and deep relaxation of the receptive partner has been the only saving-grace to many couples! The pain is excruciating...and now, you know why!

#2: Anal sex could cause ugly anal and rectal injuries!

Because of the poor elasticity, poor lubrication, and very delicate tissues of the anus and rectum, it is quite understandable if one sustains injury during anal sex. It could lead to several injuries including lacerations, anal tear, rectal tear, and even, colon perforation (which would require surgical repair for healing). Anal sex worsens condition of piles (haemorrhoids), and (due to the large number of tiny vessels in the area) causes scary bleeding.

#3: Anal sex could lead to poor control of defecation!

It is called faecal incontinence--the inabilty to control stooling or hold stool. Repeated anal sex tends to weaken the sphincters--the "valves" and "control knobs"--of the anus. After a while, the receptive partner might not be able to choose when to "poo-poo"--It comes out, uncontrollably! He or she might have to resort to some major surgeries, or the use of adult diapers (and pam-pas) meanwhile. The anal and rectal tissues are thin and delicate.

#4: Anal sex has a high risk of transmission of infections--and anal cancer!

Anal sex is the riskiest form of sexual activity; it is about 30 times riskier than vaginal sex. This is especially high without the use of condoms or protective barriers. HIV/AIDS and STDs/STIs are highest among those who practise anal sex. One of the reasons is that the anal region has plenty of vessels which are tender and easily bruised, and hence transmission of infections is easy and directly into the bloodstream. There's a high risk of anal cancer because the virus (HPV) that causes this cancer is sexually-transmitted. The bowels have the highest number of infectious microorganisms, and they can easily be transferred to the vagina during anal sex that involves penetration of the anus before the vagina.

Sex during pregnancy 


Couples often worry about having sex during pregnancy. They may be afraid that having sex could cause a miscarriage or harm the baby. With a normal pregnancy, sex is safe into the last weeks of pregnancy. In fact, some studies suggest that having sex during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of delivering too early!

The baby is well-cushioned by amniotic fluid and the strong muscles of the uterus. There is also a thick mucus plug that seals the cervix and helps to protect against infection.

It is best to talk to your doctor or nurse midwife about your specific situation to make sure you are considered at low risk for complications such a pre-term labor or miscarriage. Your doctor may advise you to limit your sex if there are signs or complications during your pregnancy. Women whose cervix seems to be opening early, and those with bleeding or an abnormally located placenta (placenta previa) should not have sex while they are pregnant.

Changes In Sexual Drive

You and your partner may experience fluctuations in sexual drive during the pregnancy. This is common during the different phases of pregnancy and will be different for everyone.

During the FIRST trimester many women experience extreme breast tenderness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and an increased need to urinate that might decrease their sexual drive. Some couples have a feeling of increased closeness that may influence their sexual desires.

Many women find that during the SECOND trimester the initial symptoms have gone away and they have an increased desire for sex. One theory for the increased desire is the increased blood supply in the pelvic region. Some women find freedom from birth control appealing and this adds to the continued sense of special closeness with their partner.

The desire for sex may change again in the THIRD trimester. Your abdomen is very large, which may make it awkward for you to have sex. Some women feel physically unattractive, while others may feel an increased sense of desirability.

The key to dealing with changes in sexual desire is to communicate your feelings and thoughts with your partner. Even with the changing desires for sex during pregnancy, some women have an increased desire for physical affection, gentle touching, and cuddling.

Positions



Having sex as your pregnancy progresses may be difficult or uncomfortable. There are a variety of positions that seem to work with greater comfort. These include:

*Both partners lying sideways, either face-to-face or spoon position.

*Woman on top.

*Rear entry.

*The woman lying on her back, knees bent, near the end of the bed.


'Unsafe' Sex

If you have oral sex, air should not be blown into your vagina. This can cause an air embolism or an air bubble to get in your bloodstream and block a blood vessel. This is extremely uncommon, but can be fatal to you and your baby.

When Limitations May Be Needed

There are some conditions or complications with pregnancy that may impact having sexual intercourse. Your health care provider may advise you to limit or avoid sex if you have one of the following conditions:

*A history of miscarriage
*A history of pre-term labor
*Vaginal bleeding or cramps
*Leakage of amniotic fluid or breaking of water
*Incompetent cervix (the cervix or opening of the uterus is weak and opens prematurely, which increases the risk for miscarriage or premature delivery)
*Placenta previa (the structure that provides nourishment to the baby is in front of the cervix or in the lower part of the uterus, instead of the usual location at the top of the uterus)
*Pain with intercourse
*Infection
You should call your health care provider if you are unsure whether sex is safe for you. If you have any symptoms that you are unsure about, such as pain, bleeding, discharge, or contractions after sex, contact your doctor.

Some women are advised to stop having sex in the last weeks of pregnancy. It is best to check with your health care provider for specific recommendations.

Remember, talking to your partner about your sexual feelings and desires during the pregnancy are important. These conversations will help lay the groundwork for the big changes about to take place for both of you -- parenthood!
